The Dawson and Pacey Fan Fiction Part 1 - By Kel Set-up: Dawson is in Capeside visiting his family during the week between the end of the USC summer film program and the start of the regular school year. Joey, Jen, and Jack have already left for Boston. [Mr. Leery is driving home from picking up Dawson at the airport.] "So how does it feel to be back in a world without all the hotshot directors and glamorous movie stars?" Mr. Leery looked expectantly at his son. "Wonderful." Dawson breathed in the cool New England air. "LA may be the movie capital of the world but to me, it's just another big city. complete with the smog, traffic and crime." He looked out the window of the Leery SUV and admired the sprawling land and majestic greenery that were undeniably Capeside. "LA has nothing on Capeside. This is home." Dawson and Mr. Leery smiled at each other, their look capturing the volume of words between them. No words needed to be said for either of them to understand the bond they shared as father and son. The glistening water of the creek up ahead signaled the proximity of the Leery house. Dawson caught his breath. He had been waiting to come home almost as soon as he arrived in LA. Not that he didn't like LA. He did. It was quite an. experience. But living up to your dream can be downright stressful and Dawson was ready to relax. No more annoying roommates and nagging professors. He was back home. "Dawson! Oh honey, I've missed you!" Mrs. Leery's screams filled the air as the SUV stopped in front of the house. She ran to him as fast as she could and attacked him with hugs and kisses. "Hi mom." Dawson smiled. "I have some great news for you honey. Pacey just called, not even ten minutes ago. I told him that you were on your way home. He wants you to call him back." Pacey called. Wow. This is monumental. Sure, we broke the barrier between us with our last phone call but this one may very well mark the beginning of us picking up the pieces of our friendship. As soon as Dawson got to the privacy of his bare-walled bedroom, he picked up the phone and called Pacey. The sound of the ringing filled the entire room as he waited anxiously. "Hello?" "Hey Pace." "Dawson. Hey man." "Umm. so my mom told me you called. What's up?" "Well, I'm just the messenger. Gretchen's coming back from her country-wide road trip tomorrow. She wanted me to let you know. She can't wait to see you." "Oh." Dawson face fell. "Well, I can't wait to see her either. Tell her to give me a ring as soon as she gets in so we can catch up." He tried his hardest to keep the hurt from becoming evident in his voice. "Will do." "Ok, well, I think my mom is calling me for dinner. I better go." "Okay, talk to you later D." Dawson sighed as he put the phone back in its cradle. The phone call hadn't gone exactly as he wanted. Pacey only called to tell him about Gretchen. Not to say he wanted to hang out, not even to say he was glad Dawson was home. A sudden wish to return to LA engulfed him. Part 2 - By Deb The lazy fingers of the last few rays of sun idly caressed the horizon and burned with sudden intensity into the kitchen of Doug Witter's apartment. Pacey quickly snapped closed the venetian blind as he hung up the phone. A dull and heavy thud behind him indicated that yet another bag had been unceremoniously dumped onto the floor. "Pacey, I love you like a brother, but that doesn't stop me from letting you know that I could really use a hand bringing in my luggage." "Gretch, I love you like a sister, but there are limits to that love. You're here for just a long weekend and you have brought home enough stuff to sink the True Love all over again." "So sue me. I'm a woman." Gretchen Witter grinned cheekily, hands on hips waiting for the sure to follow quick retort from her younger brother. None came. Instead Pacey stared at the phone, one hand gently tugging out a knot in its chord. "What's up, little brother? That uncharacteristic lack of a quick quip hasn't got anything to do with that phone call you just made has it? Pace?" Pacey Witter gave a tired grin and ran a quick hand through the short cluster of wavy locks framing his summer bronzed face. "Mmmm, ever the perceptive big sis hey Gretch?" "Look Pace. I'm not sure how you and Joey left things but you have-" "It wasn't Joey I called." Pacey quickly interjected. "She and I parted with something close to understanding. It was a certain blonde, Spielberg obsessed, boy scout, just returned from the bright lights of LA, Luke Skywalker type that we both know on the other end of the line." "Dawson? He's home?" "Well, umm yeah. He's back for a week before school starts. Look Gretch, it would really help if you acted like you knew that already, seeing as I just let him know that you were also back in the provincial homeland and about to call him, eager to catch up." "You what! Pacey, I didn't know that Dawson was supposed to be coming home and even if I did, I'd like to think that I am old enough to decide if and when I want to see him again." "I know, I know. But it was just my way of..." "Touching base with your oldest and most recently estranged friend?" Gretchen queried softly. "Yeah, somthing like that." Gretchen laid a comforting hand on Pacey's shoulder. "You two have so much history together and over a year has gone by since things went bad between the both of you. Time heals. I am sure Dawson wants to talk to you too." "I'd like to believe that Gretch, but as I know from life's school of difficult lessons, it's often harder to rebuild something than to just begin a completely new thing." Gretchen smiled in understanding and reached for the phone. "What are doing Gretchen? I was about to give you a hand with those bags." "You did tell Dawson I'd be calling him when I got in didn't you? Dougie is away at that conference and you have got pretty handy with cooking over the summer thanks to your crewing experience, so maybe, just maybe, Dawson Leery would enjoy being the guest of two Witters this evening." With a broad grin, Pacey gave Gretchen a quick hug. "Did I ever tell you that I love you like a sister?" "Prove it and start unpacking, little brother." Pacey laughed and headed out the door. Part 3 - By Ilana The seconds ticked by, one by one. It seemed as though time was going particularly slow this evening. Pacey watched the clock on the wall from his seat on the couch, growing more nervous with every tick. His lower arms rested on his thighs as he impatiently played with his hands in the space between his open legs. Pacey let out a large sigh. "Ever heard the saying 'A watched pot never boils', Pace?" Gretchen asked as she set the dinner table. Pacey turned around on the couch and looked at his sister. "Yeah?" He questioned her. "Well watching the clock isn't going to make time go any faster." She walked into the small kitchen to get glasses to set out. Pacey got up and followed her. "I know, I know." He paused and Gretchen came back with two tall wineglasses. "Why am I so nervous? It's not like I." Pacey stopped and looked at the table. "Why are their only two place settings? You're up to something." He gave her a confused look as she set down the glasses and walked towards the door. "So you're not as slow as I thought you were." Gretchen grabbed her jacket and bag from a chair by the door. "Where do you think you're going? We have a guest coming in less than 10 minutes." "I'm leaving, you're staying. There's spaghetti boiling in the kitchen and the sauce is all warmed up. All you have to do is pour the sauce on the pasta." She studied Pacey's face. She couldn't tell if he was angry or happy or what. ".And there's a bottle of wine you can drink, it's on the counter." Gretchen began to open the door. Pacey finally found his voice to speak up. "Hey! You can't leave me.What if things get, I don't know.what if we start to fight or something? Who's gonna stop us? And what about awkward silence, whose going to fill them? And--" "You'll be fine, Pace. I promise. See ya later." Gretchen grinned at Pacey and left the apartment, shutting the door behind her. Pacey let out another large sigh. Great, this is just great! Now I'm even more nervous than I originally was. He shook his head a bit and went back to the kitchen to finish preparing the meal. Part 4 - by Jo 'Dawson honey, you are going to be late!' Gail chastised her son, as he lay sprawled out across the sofa with Lily on his chest. 'That's intentional Mom' he responded curtly. 'And what kind of an attitude is that to a kind dinner invitation young man?' His mother interjected in a tone more suited to Grams. 'I don't know Mom. How am I meant to feel about this?' Dawson asked imploringly. 'A dinner date with my ex-girlfriend and former best friend? It's a recipe for disaster. OK, so I don't deny I have to deal with my resounding issues on both counts, but the two together? I just see one long painful and incredibly awkward evening ahead of me.' As if to match the mood, Lily burst into tears on her older siblings chest. Gail scooped her up and said: 'It will be even more awkward if you turn up 30 minutes late and they are already half way through second helpings! Now get going!' Dawson smiled, his mother always did know how to say the right thing. Sighing, and still feeling incredibly nervous, he picked up his car keys and walked out the door. When he arrived at Deputy Doug's apartment, Dawson spent several minutes in the street working up the courage to go in. He honestly couldn't decide who he was more nervous about seeing, Gretchen or Pacey. Eventually he decided he couldn't possibly be any later, grabbed the case of beers Mitch had bought him to take over, and went and knocked on the door. Pacey answered, a cloth hung over his arm. 'Hey man! It's great to see you!' Pacey smiled. 'You too Pace. It's been too long.' 'Please, come in. The pasta is pretty much done, it won't be a minute.' Dawson wandered in to the apartment and looked around. It had been a long time since he had been to Doug's place, almost a year and a half, since the night before they had christened the True Love, the night before the betrayal had surfaced... Dawson shook the thought from his mind. That was in the past now. 'So uh, where's Gretchen?' he asked. Pacey looked awkward. 'Well um, it's funny you should say that' he rambled as he tried to think of any excuse. 'She uh, was called away by um...' Pacey caught his friends eye and knew Dawson wasn't buying a word of it. 'OK, she's stiched us up hombre. She's gone out for the evening to leave us alone to 'sort out our issues' 'OH' was all Dawson could think of to say. Afer gearing himself up all day to see his ex-girlfriend, her sudden absence was a bit of a shock. 'I mean, I could've made up some lame excuse for her, but to be perfectly honest, if there is one thing last spring taught me, it's that honesty is the best policy, especially between you and I. And we do have a lot to talk through.' The sentence bought a sudden thought into Dawson's head, and with it a wave of conflicting emotions. He decided to take the plunge. 'You know what Pace, you're right, honesty is the best policy and we do have to talk. If we are going to re-build our fractured friendship, i can't not tell you this.' Sensing the severity of the situation, Pacey sunk into the sofa twisting the cloth between his hands. 'Go on' he said, somewhat reluctantly. Dawson took a deep breath. He had no idea how Pacey would take this, but he did know that he owed his old friend the truth. 'OK. After graduation, the night before I left for LA for the summer....Joey and I...we uh....well we kissed.' Part 5 - By Danielle Pacey stared at Dawson for a few moments before speaking up. "Good..." he said with ease. Dawson glanced up, looked back down at the table, then shot his head up once again, taking a double take. "Wh-What?" Dawson stammered and glared back at Pacey. "Dawson, my man, are you aware what I did to you was ten million times worse than what you've done to me?" Pacey poured a glass of wine, waiting for Dawson to respond. "I don't know, Pace. I mean shouldn't you be angry or surprised...or shocked or...something??" Dawson sat there, bewildered. "Apparently you aren't comprehending this. Joey and I ...we are no longer an item. I doubt we ever will be again. If you two are meant to be, you're meant to be. My time with her was nothing short of amazing. I loved her. I still do, but I can't dwell on something like that...not when I have other things to worry about." Pacey lifted his eye brows in a now-do-you-get-it kind of look. "Umm..ok...I guess.." Dawson began to twirl spaghetti around his fork. "Dawson.." Pacey waited for Dawson to lift his head and look him in the eye. Dawson did so. "You're my best friend....I don't know why I let a girl come between us, but I shouldn't have. I was just following my heart. I don't regret dating Joey, but I do regret missing out on more than a year's worth of friendship with you. Having said that, tell me about your wonderful summer in L.A.... we have a lot of catching up to do." Pacey smiled and so did Dawson. He began to talk about his adventurous time in L.A. Part 6 - By Ilana After Dawson had talked a bit about his adventures in LA, he stopped himself and looked at Pacey. "You know what though," he said as he placed his fork into his bowl and twisted some spaghetti around it, "I don't really think we should talk about my oh-so-dull college life." He lifted the fork up to his mouth and ate the bit of pasta. "Then what should we talk about?" Pacey asked him, a little nervous as to what the answer might be. Dawson sipped his wine and put the glass down gently before taking a deep breath and exhaling. Pacey studied Dawson's face, trying to find out what he was about to say next. "I think I need to explain to you," Dawson started as he stared into the deep red liquid in his glass, "why I ended things the way I did two springs ago--" "No, Dawson. You don't." Pacey interrupted, a guilty expression fell across his face. "I know why, let's not go--" "Yes, Pace. I have to. For me." Dawson cut off Pacey, looking straight at him now. Pacey nodded at Dawson to continue. "First of all, you did something to me that I never, ever thought you'd do. It was something that seemed almost impossible. Just a few weeks before I found out, we had gone camping and I told you how much you meant to me. And then, my world crumbled without even the slightest warning. Everything just changed so fast. I lost Joey, I lost you." Dawson spoke as though he had rehearsed this speech dozens of times. "And I guess I'm partially to blame for ending things so abruptly, but I was hurt, and I let my feelings get the best of me." Pacey's eyes were deeply locked with Dawson's now, the guilty expression replaced with one of confusion. "But you forgave Joey so--" "So quickly, I know. She hurt me just as much, but for some reason I couldn't stay mad at her. I had to salvage that relationship as fast as I could." He paused and sighed, his sincere eyes still meeting Pacey's with every uttered confession. "But now, I realize I should have tried to salvage ours a little faster." Pacey raised his eyebrows a bit. "Go on." He urged Dawson, motioning with his hand to continue. "During Senior year, I have to admit I missed our friendship too. It was hard not having a best friend. Everyday I fought myself in this mental battle. Should I forgive you? Or shouldn't I? But then I just stopped fighting myself and decided to let things progress on their own, see where time would take us. And you know what happened when I was finally ready to forgive you?" Pacey looked down for the first time, and uttered quietly, "Time ran out." Dawson was shocked that Pacey had finished his sentence with the exact words he was going to use. He smiled to himself a bit. "Precisely." "And?" Pacey lifted his glass and sipped the last drop of wine, all the while his eyes still focused on Dawson. "And now that we're both here, even if it is for only a week, I want to take this opportunity and rebuild our friendship. I want to do whatever it takes to get you back, Pace." He seriously stated. Pacey's lips curled up in a smile. "It's about time, Leery. It's about damn time." Part 7 - By Deb Dawson ran his hand lightly up over his forehead and gave a somewhat nervous laugh. Pacey grinned back, eyebrow arched in query. "What, my friend?" "OK, there you go again - my friend. Those words seem to come so easily and this - this - agreement that we have just reached, rather painlessly I might add, after all this time it was that simple?" "Simple? Well, yes and no. Remember that horrible night at the Jaws water screening just before school started?" Dawson smiled. "Don't forget the painful and embarrassing awkwardness of stumbling over you and Joey kissing in the halls." "Or the storm during which I lost both my boat and my pride." There was a period of silence between the two as each recalled events of the past year, times they had shared despite the emotional gulf between them. An acknowledgement of the history of hurt was there but in the honesty of the moment the pain was gone. "Aah, we sure got Drue but good didn't we?" Pacey's smile was broad with the memory. Dawson laughed and stretched out reaching for his glass on the table. "Yeah, you're right of course. Getting to this point hasn't been exactly simple." "Well amigo, we could have just tossed a coin a lot sooner - heads we're friends and tails we're...well whatever we have been to each other this past year." "No, I am glad we didn't leave this decision up to the fates." The two smiled. A look passed between them. One of understanding between two people who had known each other for many years, who had weathered hurt and who were the better for it. "Who would have thought? A bowl of spaghetti, Deputy Doug's seriously repressed apartment, an absent older sister and Luke and Hans are back in business." "Oh, great. Here we go. Pacey Witter - poor man's Yoda." "Yoda? Come on my friend. You are forgetting the rogueish, good looks and devil-may-care attitude place me squarely in the Hans Solo category." "I never thought that there would come a time when I would enjoy hearing you two employ those seemingly never-ending Star Wars' references." Dawson and Pacey turned to see Gretchen Witter standing in the doorway. Her tone was light, the words confidently taunting, but Pacey couldn't fail to see the shyness and uncertainty in the glance that she shot Dawson. Part 8 - By Nik A familiar face and voice just heard. Pacey and Dawson caught by her enjoying each other's company again, it seems. Like Old Times? Not quite yet. Dawson's heart skipped a beat for a moment. Not knowing quite what to say. Awkwardness was not even the word to describe the situation. He thought to himself, "Should I go to her? Hug her? Maybe just smile? Another thing, why is my throat so dry? I feel like no words can come out." Gretchen interrupts their same thoughts. "Hey you." "Hey." Dawson looked down to the floor. Both Gretchen and Pacey noticed how uncomfortable he was. "So did I interrupt a precious rebonding moment? I know that Luke and Hans wants to continue the trip down memory lane." Ah, memory lane. It was nice. Pacey and Dawson both had to admit that. They had just shared some lighthearted moments. Remembering the good times. Dawson even brought up seeing Pacey and Joey kissing in the hall and made a little joke about it. Who would have thought that would happen? Not Pacey. Certainly now even Dawson himself. "Isn't this what you had planned all along, Gretzilla? My, how conveniently you left a while ago. But I don't mind. Not now anyway." Pacey and Gretchen shared a glance across the room w/ hidden meaning. Dawson, however, had said nothing short of hello. He knew what he needed to do but for some reason... he was at a standstill. He couldn't move. Somehow, someway finally his feet slowly began to function. He walked over to give Gretchen a hug. "Sorry it took me a moment to do this", Dawson said, trying to make light of the situation. "It's really good to see you." "It's good to see you again too." Gretchen noticed how their bodies tensed while hugging. But it felt good to her for them to hug again. Dawson was thinkin' the same thing. But it wasn't the time to dwell on that now. Not yet. They pulled apart from each other. Both flashed a slight small smile. They returned to some awkward small talk. "So Dawson, you were able to survive the meal w/ Pacey? I mean, eating his cooking. He may think he's Martha Stewart just because of his crewing experience but don't let him fool you. I didn't know how much to leave him to do so all I asked for him to do was pour the sauce over the spaghetti. He seemed to have handled that just fine." Gretchen had to laugh. So did Pacey. "Yeah, it wasn't hard for this Witter here. Pour some sauce and look what you have here. A ready made dinner for 2 be. um, be. for 2 friends to enjoy." Dawson noticed that little phrase Pacey was just about to say. 2 best friends. Is that what they were again? Not quite. But. it's not a foreign concept anymore. It just may happen sooner than they both think. "Oh, surviving dinner, that was just a piece of cake. There have been worse circumstances. If we could survive what went down 2 springs ago, we could survive anything." 2 springs ago. Survivors. That's what they were. They did get through what went down before. Neither one said to each other, though. that it was done w/ heavy hearts and lots of regrets. But they both knew it without even saying it. They couldn't help it. It still brought up twinges of hurt and sadness for them. They both wanted to move on. It seemed like they were trying to do that earlier tonight. Had they? They did talk about some of the stuff briefly. Even shared some light laughs. But were they on familiar ground again? It just didn't seem like it. Not yet. Some of their conversation still seemed forced. Maybe they both were reading too much into things. Maybe they both were trying too hard. They both wanted to rebuild this friendship. It wasn't supposed to be this hard, so unfinished. It wasn't like old times. Not quite yet. The room was now filled w/ those long awkward silences that both dreaded would happen sometime tonight. Gretchen noticed and thought it best for her to leave. "Yup I was right, I did come back a little prematurely. I have to do an errand again anyway but Pacey, first I need to talk to ya alone outside for a sec." "Alright." Gretchen shot that look of uncertainty again to Dawson. "Hope to talk to you more later on this week, Dawson." "Same here, Gretchen." Pacey and Gretchen walked outside. When they were alone, Gretchen didn't hesitate. "So how is he? I can't believe I just saw him after all this time. He still looks great. What did he say? What did you guys talk about? Did he say he missed me? What has he been up to? How's.?" "Ok, ok. Chill, Gretchen. You're talking a mile a minute. He's doing well. We've been trying to catch up on things. It's been an interesting but good evening so far. Um. he hasn't said too much about you but from the way he was looking at you when you walked in, I believe that said it all." "Was it that obvious?" "Um, a little. And . " Pacey hesitated. "Some other things became more obvious to me tonight too." "What do you mean by that?" "Nothing." "No, don't say "nothing". You know you can't outwitter another witter. What do you mean?" "Well, um. he told me tonight. he kissed Joey after graduation." Gretchen didn't know how to react. Should she even react? Her face showed how her heart felt. A twinge of pain. Reading her face, which mirrored his own heart, Pacey said "Yeah, I felt the same way when he told me. But I don't know why I didn't show my true feelings to him. I kind of shrugged it off like it didn't really matter to me." Gretchen didn't understand. "Like how? Spill, bro." "I didn't act shocked or angry. I didn't act like I just got kicked in the stomach, although that's how I felt. Damn. Dawson and I are trying to do this honesty thing and I failed miserably in just that moment. I miss our friendship badly but this isn't the way to start off on the right foot." "Hmmmm. seems to me that there's still a ways to go between you two." "I know, I know. Another thing. Joey and I have broken up. But I can't act like she isn't the love of my life. I still love her. I can't deny that. Things are still open between Jo and I. We're still not at closure. Hell, things aren't at closure between Dawson and Joey either. That's obvious." Pacey could feel himself getting all worked up over this. But this wasn't the time to deal w/ this. Not this week. Gretchen said, "I gotta admit, it felt like the wind was just blown out of me when you told me that Dawson and Joey kissed. Was that a normal reaction for me to have? Yes, because Dawson did mean a lot to me. He still does. But I can't help to say that I wasn't surprised. We all know the reasons why we broke up. It does hurt but I have to move on. But you... you need to think about this though. You don't know what Joey has to say about the kiss. You don't know what it exactly means." "Um, that's true. And I do want and need to talk to her. But not now. Joey's in Boston anyway. I'll have to settle things w/ her on my own. Another day. Another time. My heart can only stand one crisis at a time. But . I'm glad Dawson told me. That means something about our friendship, right? That means he wants us to be honest and get passed all this? I'm really grateful for that." "You should. And I've already taken up some more of the bonding time. So have fun. And tell him. um. tell him. oh never mind. " "You alright?" "Yeah, I'm cool. Don't worry about me. You know what you have to do, right? I wanna hear all about it when I get back, of course. See ya bro!" Gretchen winked at Pacey and then leaves w/ a small glance to the apt where she knows Dawson is waiting and Pacey is headed inside. "Sorry man, that took a little longer than expected." Dawson didn't hesitate either. "So is she okay? Did she ask more about me? What did she say? What has she been up to?" "Ease up, man. You are about as bad as she is." Pacey chuckled. Dawson smiled. "Really? She did the same thing?" "Um, something like that. She's good though. Ya know the same old Gretzilla. My favorite sister." "You're only sister", Dawson chimed in. "From all the questions, it sounds as if you still care about her." "I do, man. We shared something really special. Why are you sounding surprised?" "No reason.." Here I go again, Pacey thought to himself. Not showing how he really felt. "Oh I get it. you don't think I do because I kissed Joey." "Actually I don't know what the hell to think about you kissing Joey. I can tell you that my initial reaction wasn't even close to how I really felt when you told me." "Well, why didn't you say something then? That's what this evening supposed to be about, right? We have to lay everything out on the table. That's why I told you. Even though um. I may not have told you honestly how I felt about the kiss either." Pacey and Dawson looked at each other. Really looked at each other. Their eyes said everything. They both finally understood. "We need to talk about that some more, huh, Pacey?" "Yeah, I think we do. But not now. Like I told Gretchen, we both have our separate Joey issues that we must deal with. Another day. Another time. But this evening. actually this week is our chance to make steps in rebuilding this relationship. Really reconnecting. Time ran out on us before, remember? It's about us this week. We lost so much not talking to each other. No, we can't ever get that time back. But we can make the most of the time we have now. The time we're gonna get in the future. " "Well, I was actually liking the idea of doing that coin toss thing you suggested before but I think we are having better luck this way. You know, talking, all that good stuff." Pacey and Dawson smiled again. That look between them. Like be. best friends. Were they there yet? Have they gotten close to that familiar ground they so desperately are searching for? Well there's only one way to find out. Both were prepped to say something but both hesitated for a moment. Each was trying to read each other's thoughts. Both finally succeeded. "Man, we should go camping tomorrow," Pacey and Dawson said at the exact same time. They thought, did that just happen? Ah, the memories of their old fort. The place where they did their preadolescent mail bonding. Now, that's definitely familiar territory. Dawson broke the momentary silence. "We have to stop doing that. Finishing each other sentences. Thinking similar thoughts. People will start to believe that we like each other." Pacey smirked. "Yeah, that's a scary and cruel thought. We can't let that secret get out. So dude, camping, it is?" "Definitely, as long as you promise there won't be any 10 yr old juvenile delinquents w/ cell phones that will follow us there." Ah, like old times. It wasn't simple or easy but finally. Dawson and Pacey were honestly getting somewhere.
